Alsatian Vineyards - previous | next

new vines

Alsatian vineyards are in the northeastern part of France, near the German border, between Strasbourg and Mulhouse. In mid June I flew into Basel, Switzerland, rented a car and drove to Mulhouse, where Beth was already studying at the Musee de L'Impression sur Etoffes. We stayed at the Hotel du Musee where I based my journey each day. The hotel staff was friendly and welcoming, especially the owner, M. Gerard Freulet, a font of local information about foods, customs and innumerable other things.
Not unlike a commuter, I drove up the A35 towards Strasbourg each day, turning off at different exits for my explorations into the wine area.

I visited (and purchased wines from) many wonderful vineyards; more than I can show here. Some of my favorites were:

Wine and Textiles (the subject of Beth's studies) aren't the only attractions in this area. A visit wouldn't be complete without visits to Petite France in Strasbourg as well as the Strasbourg Cathedral which dates from the twelfth century and is built on Roman foundations; Haut-Koenigsbourgh castle, with its history of strategic importance, situated high overlooking the surrounding countryside towards the Rhein; and the Unterlinden Museum in Colmar with the incredible Isenheim Altarpiece by Grunewald.
