My interest in photographing dance began in 1989 when I became a board member and later board president of Terry Beck Dance Troupe. Photographing their rehearsals opened a window into this exciting world of expression through movement. It collided with my own work of capturing the energy and mystery of movement in water.
I first worked with Jeanne Ruddy in 2000 during her premier Philadelphia season and continue to do so. When Jeanne was beginning choreography in 2005 on Breathless, she discovered my work with water and movement which lead to our collaboration for that performance. Images of dancers sinking into water were combined in a video which was projected on the set background. View some of these images.
For Jeanne’s newest work, Oceans 1:Wetlands, I created large images to be used as movable panels during the performance as well as promotional images. It was suggested early on that an exhibit of my photography be held during the Ruddy Dance 2007 season at the Performance Garage in Philadelphia. The exhibit was open to the public one hour before the performances and during intermission to dance patrons. There was a closing reception April 29, 2007 during The Fairmont Arts Crawl.
